Today I mostly .....
Re: Today I mostly .....
Got back to treating and painting the Land Rover 110 chassis. Had to fix a couple spots of rust so treated those, etch primed and top coat or two of chassis black - Drivers O/S side done.
Started the Passenger side (N/S) and got the inner side of the chassis rails cleaned, treated and primed. Tomorrow hopefully a coat of chassis black before going to work and before the carpet fitters arrived.
Emptied the master bedroom ready for new carpet to arrive
Purchased a 2 man popup tent ready for the WRC in September.

Re: Today I mostly .....
Put the bedroom furniture back in the room after getting the new carpet fitted.
Started looking a PC that does not have any screen display on boot up or any beeps
No beeps when removing the video card
The only beeps I get are when I remove the memory.
Tried swapping RAM around and no good
Swapped PSU no good
Tried a PCI video card and no good.
Suspect either CPU or motherboard

Reseated the CPU and have removed the CMOS battery but not done the old jumper trick
I can feel heat in the CPU without heatsink and also from underneath the motherboard as well.

Re: Today I mostly .....
Had my journey out of town interrupted by a smell of burning electronics - a few minutes later accompanied by smoke pouring out of the stereo in the Saab.
Rather unnerving when the cabin starts filling up with smoke when you're on a main road with nowhere safe to stop!
Not entirely sure what's happened, but it hadn't blown any fuses despite a pretty major looking meltdown in several places on the PCB. As several semiconductors looked to have popped I decided that it wasn't worth trying to repair the original (late 90s I reckon Denon radio cassette unit), so replacement was the order of the day. Ended up with a Philips unit for £80 from Halfords which doesn't look massively out of place and has a display which you can set your own colour with, so have been able to match it pretty closely to the pale green of the dash illumination.

Sounds a heck of a lot better than the old one, that's for sure. Not sure if it's maybe been having issues for a while. At least the speakers seem to have survived. Last time I had a head unit expire it shoved 12V down all the speaker lines and fried them!

Today I mostly...
Attended the Cars & Guitars annual concert at the Grampian Transport Museum. Had hoped to see a few more cars there maybe, but nevertheless was a great day. Nicely varied turnout, lots of people there, great weather and good music too.
Curator of the museum apparently is also coveting my car which I'm taking as a compliment!
Now just assessing how well I've managed to get myself sunburnt.

This has brakes, but will only be used to recovery rally cars on stage and not one the road.

...Today I mostly:
Attempted to underseal the Saab. This was foiled when one of the seals on my pressure sprayer decided to disintegrate. Turns out to be the actual plate which screws onto the can has warped. Lovely. Need to buy another one next weekend.
Also managed to poke two holes in it. One about half the size of a 5 pence coin in the back of the offside rear wheelarch (nowhere near any attachment points for anything...just a random hole!). Not too worried about that as it should be an easy fix. Other one is rather larger and is in the usual suspect spot down by where the driveshaft comes through from the engine bay. The underside of this area has been repaired previously but the sides haven't been touched yet. Will be speaking to my friendly local welding expert to see if I can get that sorted out next week as I know that this is rust which can and often does kill Saabs. Adamant that it's not claiming this one yet.

Re: Today I mostly .....
Oooh...Another Merc. Very nice.
Today I mostly...
Collected 2 full car loads of late 60s lighting equipment from my old office building which is currently being stripped out. Demo company were very accommodating of my rather oddball request and were very friendly actually. ...They're probably just baffled by someone actually asking nicely rather than trying to nick stuff!
Two car loads, when you're talking about a Saab 900 with the seats down is actually quite a lot. Reckon the fixtures must weigh 30-40kg apiece, and there were 14 of them to cart up here to the second floor at this end. Near enough killed me!
Far more than I originally asked for - or have space for or any idea what to do with - so several may end up getting rehomed.
Tomorrow's task will be removing the 44 years worth of grime, doing a proper inventory and de-modernising a couple of them (will probably end up with one scrap fixture as a result of that - the metal from which will be used to repair the Saab's rusty wheel arch). All lovely old stuff though made by Atlas and Coughtrie. Built to withstand nuclear attack, that's for sure...

Re: Today I mostly .....
Spent the day on the chassis of the 110 giving it a good paint and good seeing to.
After a few hours it now looks a lot better, just the section from the front outrigger to the front of the chassis next.
I did have a "Why did I poke that bit of rust moment" In this case, its the bit where the chassis meets the rear x-member. I decided to remove a clump of rust....but this remove section and left a hole
Also had a quick look at the Harvey Frost today. Picked up a new wheel bearing for the hub, and then had a look at the wheels and decided they are a bit scabby, so split the rim (oh err sounds a bit rude) and attacked the wheels with a wire wheel. Treated with some rust treatment and then gave the wheel a coating of primer.
and finally collected a set of Paddy Hopkirk roof bars I won on Ebay
