WHAT'S A FAIR PRICE? RESTORATION PICTURES NOW ADDED

Post by eveshamsteve » Sat Mar 14, 2009 2:54 pm

I have been to look at a 1979 Lada 1600 saloon today. It has been parked in a garage for years. Probably at least seven. Obviously tax and MOT long gone.

As far as I could see in the limited space available bodywork reasonable. Little rust top of wings but nothing too serious. Could only look underneath one side (nearside) and floor that side solid.

The lady selling it needs it out the garage but would not give an indication as to what she would accept for it.

Not heard it run though they assured me it would start.

I know I will have to spend a lot on it getting it into a tidy condition, sorting out any mechanical problems, and getting it roadworthy and through an MOT.

Trying to find this particular model in any condition proving to be very difficult.

So how much is fair? I was thinking double scrap price. About £200. But I want it and don't want to lose it.

Scrap prices have crashed in the past 6 months. You'll be lucky to get £20 for a scrap car these days.

I think £200 is fair.

Nice find.

That's what I thought. I have offered her £200 and she is "considering the offer".

I must admit I was shocked. Thought she'd bite my hand off at that price. After all it could be a money pit!

Steve, I think £200 is more than fair. she won't get anything like that anywhere else and is deluded if she thinks otherwise. as it stands, it's worth jack sh*t to most people as it is not cool enough to be considered a classic yet. (and probably never will be) It's only us weirdos that see the good points! Remember my 1500 (bright yellow) when I saw you at Crich? I paid £900 with 12 months mot and NO rust and full running order.

There a very nice car. When i was in Ukraine 2 years ago,i travelled in one of them. They have the same tail lights as the 1600 Niva.200£ is enough for it.If she is looking for more, let it there and give her your contact details, because she will be back to you begging you to give her the200 .Eugene

You're right. In fact you have now convinced me I OFFERED HER TOO MUCH! She now thinks she has a valuable classic on her hands. I will wait for her to come down to earth and call me.

Will let you know what happens.

Yes. Heard today. The car's mine!

Have to arrange a trailer and will collect it (hopefully) next weekend.

Checked on DVLA website and it was last taxed in 2001.

Looking forward to collecting it. First thing after getting out of the confined and dark garage would be to look underneath. My biggest worry would be corrosion. I have found from past experience they are either very solid or very rotten! Keeping finger's crossed.

Will take a camera and put up photos next week.

Well I got it. Rust on tops of wings (typical for a Lada). Back brakes were seized on but managed to free them off.

Have taken it straight to a garage to see exactly what work it will require for an MOT. Managed to find an ex-Lada dealer still operating near Hinckley.
