Ipaqs, TomTom and External GPS

Arrrrrggggghhhhhhhhh
Trying to setup up TomTom 6 on an Ipaq H5550 with a Garmin 12XL gps via a cable...Which is now working. After I sussed that another application was using the same Com port as TomTom wanted to use(close down the app), and to change the protocol type to NMEA on the Garmin.
Each time I exit the TomTom application it does save the setup for the GPS device which is driving me up the wall!!!
Why cant it save the settings.!!!.....Arrrggggg
All i want to do is flick between two mapping apps with out having to re-do the settings for the GPS each time, not something i want to consider doing as driving along(stopped at lights!)
