Charity cycle ride (blatant plug!!!)

Post by slowbob » Wed Jan 11, 2012 8:59 pm

My dad passed away late last year following a short fight with Cancer.
During his battle, he was cared for by many people who can only be discribed as angels. They worked for Macmillan Cancer Care.
To honour my dad's memory and to help raise some much needed funds for Macmillan, I have entered this years Etape du Tour, a cycling event. It will take place in July and follow the same route as a stage of this years Tour de France, through the Alps.
It will cover some 140 KM and will go over the top of 3 mountain passes!!!
More details are here.

As I mentioned, I'm trying to raising as much money as possible for Macmillan Cancer Care, hence the blatent plug!!! Should you feel like you wish to support them, you can donate at my just giving page.

I have first hand experience of what good they do and if you are ever in the position of needing their help then i'm certain you will be in great hands.
Thanks.

Only 19 weeks to go until my charity ride, it sounds alot but the weeks will soon disappear.
I have upped my training this week, getting out every other day, either to the gym to do some serious high intensity work, or my preferred training, out on the bike.
I managed to do 39 miles in the rolling Suffolk countryside today, let me tell you, Suffolk isn't as flat as you would think. The ride was 2hour 23 mins with an average speed of 16.2 mph. I'm happy with that. I will use that route as a guide to how my fitness is developing, I will see if I can get that down to around 2 hours in the next few months.
If you want to give me your support, please post on here. This is probably the most physical and mental test of endurance that I have ever put my body through and your encouragement will be most welcome. :D

Call me mad but i've just signed up to do the Norwich 100 cycle event on 27th May. 100 miles around the Norfolk countryside, should make an ideal training ride for my alpine challenge. :D

er.... you do know the Alps have a few more 'lumps' than Norfolk?......... :D

Just for a reference, and to keep the topic on top, I used to average 21 mph over 30 miles when I was cyling properly. On a mountain bike as well......

Yes, Norfolk isn't no Alps!!!
I managed an av of 18.2mph over 30 miles yesterday, so i'm getting better!!!
I have done 100 miles in a whisker over 5 hours, thats an av of 20mph, takes some doing to maintain that sort of average, even in flatish east anglia. I did that about 5 years ago and need to get back to that level of fitness.
Distance cycling is as much a mental battle as it is a physical one.

What an awful day it was today. I still had to get out on the bike as I need to keep the training on course. There was a strong north easterly wind that just blew and blew all the time. Made sure that the last quarter of the ride was back wind. 47 miles today, in 2 hours 50 mins.
Tomorrow isn't looking any better so, another wet ride for me.

Another weekend done, another 96miles in total covered. I've lost the best part of 1 and a half stone since i started training!!
I'm not sure how accurate heart rate monitors are but, mine informed me yesterday that during my 4 hour ride, i burnt off 3174 calories. If you wanna loose weight, get out on your bicycle :D :D

Today was the Norwich 100 bike ride. An early start time of 7.15 at least allowed for most of the ride to be done before it got too hot. Finished in a time of 5 hr's 35 mins. Very pleased with that.
