Finally testdriving! Check the time for "before-after" - it is half the normal low 1st. _________________ /mats

Thanks - but the place and garage in the pic belongs to my mother... 75 years old and she likes to have sons and grandsons there working with their cars. Win-win, I think - she gets company and we get a nice garage to work in.
The work - I just put the bits together, "Niva-Micke" from the Swedish forum is the hero in this story. _________________ /mats

Testdrive on normal country road, 90 km/h = check! (sounds a bit different, but actually better, less howling more transmissionwhirr...)
Testdrive on small bumpy steep forest trail = check! (amazing going steep uphill without using accelerator, speed is so slow that the EFI adjust idle and actually acts as crusie control. I love it! Bumpy offroad goodbye! Hello rock crawling!!)
Next weekend there is an offroad meet not far and I will do a real offroad test. So far it is the best improvment I have done on the Niva - including the exorsism of the Horror Carb. _________________ /mats

You have done a great write up on this mod and its on my list of modifications, Ive got all the bits and bobs to do the job even an engineer to do the lathe ork etc. just got to get my act together now but you have inspired me into getting it done _________________ Allan
Thanks. I'm happy if there are more that try this modification. My aim was to show that it can be done without special tools, once you have the layshaft. After it's simply a completely different car offroad. And so much more gentle to the suspension and driveline. _________________ /mats

Real testdriving in offroad area = check! All worked fine, the area was partly rocky and partly with a lot of stubs. Comfort when driving is just so much better and likewise control. Even in hard, uneven terrain you can plan your driving without working with the clutch all the time. Also suspension gets a much more easier job now that speed is just half compared to before.
It takes a little different technique, one has to remember that torque on the driveline is twice what is used to be, so no stupid "attack" with high revs and lettiing go of clutch. Slow start but not hesitating works best.
It is a bit hard to describe - but I think you get the message. This is a great mod for anyone going offroad under "bumpy" conditions, like rocky trails or over logs and stubs. For mudracing or smooth moddy forest roads it's no different - but I use 2nd gear there now. _________________ /mats
