The Fiat 124 five speed box has a long shaft coming from the layshaft with a nut securing the fifth speed/reverse gear instead of the stub the Lada box has.
I have a few boxes both Fiat and Lada type and a few spare t/cases so will be looking to modify a t/case.

Before anyone points it out: Yes, I know about hydraulic presses, proffessional bearing pullers and lathes. But, the object of this test was to get the modified shaft in a parcel and do the rest with normal tools that a normal niva-owner got at home.

I try to show that it is not rocket science and that the parts can take some beating without breaking. Heavy (but controlled) use of sledge hammer. More rock crawlers to the people! Smile

I was going to point out that the bit that needs to be grinded/turned down on the center diff looks awful thin when complete... having thought about it though, that bit doesn't take any drive I guess, it's just top keep the whole thing in line. just out of curiosity how much material is left there?

If it's possible to break it, I most likely will....

Nooo... Murphy's Law does not apply on Russian cars! That's why I got one! Laughing

"the thin bit" is out of the "drive" - power runs through "the thick side" to the shaft to the primary two small differential wheels. Still, a good question, I will try to measure...

Not easy to measure... I even tried to mock up a tool Smile

But, I would say that if you dont go deeper than the oval oil channels, and not further in than you see in the pics - there is still 5 mm of the goods left. There is a "ridge" on both sides of the channels. Not much... enough? Time will tell...

New low gear is 3.0:1 compared to 2.135:1 from factory.

Test drivers say that the "new" second gear feels like the "old" first gear.

Edit: Correct lowgear ratio is 2.135:1 from factory
