has anyone stuck a tow bar to the bumper brackets via a steel bumper joist on a niva ? if so what sort of load will it pull/hold ... i had one on the front of an old niva for shifting caravans but that was around a flat field for a few yards ?

The PC had a tow bar affixed in the manner you describe.
I don't know how much work it had done, but it finally failed on me.

As I see it, the bumper setup is designed around forward/aft stress only, whereas a towbar will exert vertical stress.

I would suggest a towbar needs to be reinforced from a vertical piece of the Niva's anatomy as well.
