okay baxter,i'll put my hand up.........
come from napier originally (central east coast of north island),but moved over to australia 24 jan 1990
moved to sydney originally (over rated expensive tourist trap),and then moved to the gold coast, (as above)
moved here to caboolture (approx 50kms north of brisbane airport, half way between brisbane & sunshine coast) about 15-16 years ago, good move.
drove trucks interstate for a few years, clocking up a million or 2 kms,but gave it up just over 11 years ago to sell car parts

P.S.-IF YOU'RE STUCK FOR PARTS IN NZ (NEW OR USED) TRY:
GEE MOTORS IN NAPIER
THEY'RE THE IMPORTERS OF NEW LADA PARTS INTO NZ,SO YOU WILL FIND THEM MUCH CHEAPER THAN OTHER PLACES..........
THEIR FREECALL IN NZ IS 0800 33 1234

| I'm in tauranga and have a 1500 wagon. It's a bit rusty and other projects mean it's a low prority, but it will be fixed or replaced with another in better condition. Some day... |

Wicked - welcome along.
Anyone wanna post images of their Kiwi Ladas?
I'll get the ball rolling:
And a little about yourself:
I live in Dunedin and keen to hook up with other Nivas for some off-road fun. I have some basic recovery gear...
Shame most NZ peeps here are in the North Island.
I own a 1990 Niva 1600 5-speed, with a Weber swap. Yeah!
Other than taking the parents Mk3 Cortina places physics dictate shouldn't have gone when I was a teenager I'm pretty new to 4WDing. I like the Niva because 1) it's a reasonably competent 4WD (other than in mud - I need some decent mud tyres ) and 2) if I have to leave it at the bottom of a cliff in the middle of nowhere I'll have lost less than the average year's devaluation on a 'Crusier (not that I'd be happy now I've invested so much time and blood getting my Niva right), and 3) it's mostly a DIY owners dream.
Because of the lack of local Niva info I collected a lot from the 'net (mostly on my site, link below). And I'm friends with nivaman from Difflock a local Niva owner who is happy to do perk work on Nivas if you need, and loves a good muddy play
I also race a Honda CR-X in local hillclimbs, well used to, I haven't been arsed getting a WOF on it for a couple of years. Damn WOF nazis.
I also have a classic mk1 Escort coupe with a blown engine rusting away in the drive that needs some love and attention if I ever get free time and spare dosh at the same time. And I drive an MR2 as my daily to save mileage on the Niva.
Now over to you... _________________ 1990 Niva 1600, Weber & 2" lift

Well I may have found a replacement wagon already. One came up on TradeMe, in hastings. It needs a seat belt replaced (have one of those), steering idler arm (that too) and a correct sized tyre.
This looks like a good excuse for a road trip and a chance to stretch the legs of my other recently purchased toy, a 1982 Honda GL 500.
I decided to give a Lada a go after having a chance to drive one. I quite enjoyed it and the fact it's very basic functional car appeals. Less is more and all that...
And if it turns into a nightmare, well, I've spent a lot more on other hobbies before. I don't expect it to be all smooth sailing, but it might be a fun adventure. |

Logging in from Huntly...
I'm a mechanic and was working on Waiheke Island during ''Lada Season''.They were the cheapest new car around, and a lot of older people retired and bought their last new car to see them out in their retirement....and most regretted their choice of car.Of course the Jap Import killed the Lada dead, but I worked on a lot of Lada's,mostly sedans and Niva's as the 4x4 was popular on Waiheke.
I got a Samara for one of my daughters to learn to drive in a few years ago,I was really impressed with it,it was a great little performer. My daughter wasn't that pleased with it and had a surge of hope when she thought it was stolen one day - but when she told the Cop it was a Lada he said in that case I doubt it has been stolen.Just a parking towaway, and she wasn't happy to pay to get it back.
I now have a 2104 that I got from a deceased customer when I had my own business. The woman owner was really fussy about it and repaired any little thing wrong with it.When I got it last year it had only done 39,000km,so kinda hard to turn down a cheap car with mileage that low.I put some 185/70 tyres on it and improved the ignition system, but it still goes like a 2104.
It seems to be an orphan in our family,no one wants to drive it and it may have to go....pity because I quite like it -

Yeah,I've tried to find information on Lada's on the net before without much success,so put in Lada UK and found this one.I'm Lada Trouble on TradeMe....too many people know who Motu is.
I'm commuting to Auckland for a couple of months, and feeling guilty about using the Pajero when the Lada is just lying around. So today I took the Lada....it's ok on the open road, but not much fun in traffic and at lights. But I think I get more respect than in the Pajero....the Lada just looks too dangerous to tangle with, and they are sure it's not insured - and they are right! |
