Today I mostly .....
Re: Today I mostly .....
Heard the most lovely sounding bit of kit I've encountered in a long while. Ended up behind one of the airport fire tenders from Aberdeen Airport today (not sure where it was going!), one of the huge great Carmichael things which looks like a prop out of Thunderbirds.
Not 100% sure what's powering it - but I'd have said two stroke V8 from the sound of it - coupled to a real screamer of an Alison gearbox too. Not much in the way of silencing on it either...mighty impressive at full chat on a main road! Wasn't hanging around either!
Suffice to say I didn't overtake on the dual carriageway because I was enjoying the soundtrack - even from a respectable following distance - far too much!

Re: Today I mostly .....
Tried to buy a trailer bearing seal. Went to my first trailer shop and he didn't have one, so got directed to another place that does seals. Got there at 16:50 hoping they would be open. They were....but when I asked the guy for a seal he said, sorry we are closed and all the computers are off so can't do a sale. Oh ok, what time do you close? About now was the reply!
So will have to go back tomorrow!

Painted the inside of the doors and boot to complete my new paint job. I'm pleased with how it's come out, for a roller and brushes job...!

Re: Today I mostly .....
Thanks! Yeah was dead easy. I had no idea what I was doing with the amount of thinners to use so I guessed, gave it a good clean and sploshed the paint on. Used a small foam roller and I'm amazed how smoothly it's come out!

Bugati 35

another view

Meadows circa 1931(ish) note twin SU balance pipe (owner reckons it's crap)

2nd meadows circa 1930 race tuned, note Balance pipe

Anzani side valve circa 1928 (the Heath Robinson style brass and steel rods to the left are the throttle)

Anzani manifold

and the (Anzani) rebuild (40 years and counting!

last but not least gearing detail, Reverse is far left (Ithink)

Sorry I know they are not Lada's and my dad bless him does pull a funny face when I start raving about them.

Re: Today I mostly .....
Today I mostly...
Expressed my immense gratitude to my flatmate for spending the last two days welding the offside inner wheel arch of my Saab back together. He also serviced the front brakes for me...had been on my to-do list for ages but apparently the squeaking finally drove him around the bend! We also then spent about half an hour crawling over the front of the car trying to track down what's creaking in the steering. Result came back as a solid "unknown" so I'll poke it further tomorrow. All three 900s I've had so far have done it to some extent.
Spent a good portion of the evening investigating the possibility of oil cooling this PC (it's got to the stage where I really need to replace all the fans save for the one on the CPU as they're getting noisy). Have always wanted this thing to be silent, but water cooling seems a right faff and I'm not sure how well I'd trust it. You've still got fans running in the PSU then anyway. Got everything I'd need for an oil cooling setup rattling around here anyway, save possibly for a big enough box to stick it in - which would be dead easily obtainable.
...Until I realised that the oil to fill the thing was probably going to cost upwards of £100.
So much for that plan. Guess I'll just be buying some new fans then. Just when I thought I'd found a use for that old Saab heater matrix that's been getting moved around the loft every couple of months for the last ten years!
Wish I'd figured out that was a non-starter before figuring out virtually every other detail.
Oh, also had to drill out the screw which snapped off in the end of the RC car's crankshaft earlier in the week. That was fun. New screw for my starter to operate (which isn't made of aluminium this time) has now been put in place and we'll give it another shot at the weekend. Have had it cranking over quite a few times this week and it's just stubbornly been refusing to fire aside from the odd cough. May need to try the bigger drill which runs a lot faster than my battery one and see if that helps.

That happened to me last week. Well actually it was the 90 degree plastic fitting. Don't try and seal it up with silicone sealer to get you home, it won't work!TheRealNivaman wrote:Today i mostly ..... Today I mostly...
Watched in amusement as the control system for one of our lifts at work had a complete nervous breakdown and lost all sense of where it was. Throughout the day it became increasingly erratic and started showing garbage. Probably the most amusing part though was when it got as far as the 7th floor.
Given that it's only a four storey building, that's pretty good going...
