Today I mostly .....
Re: Today I mostly .....
Went shopping to the Land Rover dealership to pick up some clutch parts and then had a look at the Evoque and sat in the new Puma 2.2 Defender.
This afternoon was a gardening session. Weeded between the flags, cleaned up the borders and leveled out the plum slate and have ended up with about 1/4 ton of un-needed slate. Started converting a plastic oil drum into an additional water butt.
Then this evening as it was a nice evening we got this going....

Re: Today I mostly .....
Today I mostly...worked from home on account of the office being closed due to flooding.
Actually surprisingly productive, though mostly I reckon by virtue of my PC at home being faster and not having a phone ringing every two minutes! Having music in the background also a bonus.
EDIT:
This evening replaced the offside indicator repeater (it had water in and had stripped all the silvering off) and the plastic cap over the retaining bolt on the 107. Also fitted the sill protectors which I'd been meaning to for a week.
Saab had its throttle body and the air metering system all cleaned out as they were unsurprisingly full of gunk - though nowhere near as bad as on some I've seen. Idle speed has also been turned down to more sensible levels (was previously at about 1400rpm in drive, and considerably more in park/neutral) which has made driving around down cooler, more economical and somewhat less violent. Things are much more sedate now. My OCD tendencies meant that all the dodgy bulbs in the instrument panel were replaced yesterday evening - the ones in the heater controls don't really get any easier once you've done them four times...you still need foot long triple jointed fingers...Only thing not lighting up now is the drivers power window switch, which I'm ignoring for now because I know how hard to get apart those suckers are. I'll wait until it bugs me enough then stick an LED in there to ensure I don't have to do it again.
Tasks for the weekend: Change alternator drive belts (need my decent driver to get the power steering pump bolt loosened off, it's bloody tight), change coolant, rust proof doors and possibly clean up the brake calipers and grease the back of the pads to hopefully stop the confounded squeaking which they're doing just now! Will be interesting to see if I can improve on the 22.1mpg from the first fill of the tank now it's been serviced etc.

Re: Today I mostly .....
This week:
Mainly had a week off work.
Clutch replaced on the Landy
Fingers crossed a judder/clunking from underneath when braking to a stop has been solved
Adjusted the striker plate for the drivers door
Traced a frayed wire
Relplaced the transfercase rear output seal (but still leaks)
Made two trips the LR main dealer and drooled over a couple of models in the showroom
Converted a 210L plastic oil drum to a water butt and made a stand for it.
Tidied up the back garden
Back to work tomorrow for a rest! NEver mind 4 weeks in and then a week off.

Re: Today I mostly .....
Today I mostly...
1. Complained about the weather.
2. Bent the first 16mm spanner I tried to use to release the retaining bolt on the Saab's power steering pump, second one slipped off, which also resulted in a huge gash on my right index finger which is now driving me around the bend.
3. Later attacked it with a more substantial spanner and managed to shift the blasted thing so I could get the tension off the belts to replace the ones for the alternator/water pump which were beyond knackered. I should have got a photo - reckon there was about 1mm actually holding them together. Power steering belt is more or less OK and looks to have been replaced (relatively) recently. I'll probably still get it changed soon just for peace of mind.
Discovered looking at the side of the engine that most of the oil that I washed off last weekend has not returned - so just the oil change may have gone some way to stopping some of the leaks. Haven't really cleaned it too thoroughly yet though (had run out of water repellent, and the last thing I wanted was to end up with a car with a soggy ignition system and no way to dry it!). Will attack it shortly with some degreaser and the pressure washer to track down better where the oil is actually coming from - my money's on the timing cover though.

Re: Today I mostly .....
Today I mostly...broke down!
Second time ever that I've had to be towed. First time in a car on the rigid tow pole thing...very odd sensation.
Coming down a hill I noticed a funny vibration - and realised a few moments later that the engine was missing. It then proceeded to die. Managed to get it going again a few minutes later after ushering my co-worker who was with me onto a bus back to the office.
Made it a few hundred yards further - far enough at least to get me into a nice quite residential street out of the rush hour traffic. Managed to come to the conclusion that I was suffering from fuel starvation issues - well, when it wasn't flooding anyway, which it seemed to be fond of at startup.
Suspicion seems to have fallen on the warmup regulator as that playing up can send the fuel pressure - and consequently the mixture awry. Car seems to run OK when cold - but as soon as it starts warming up again it's playing up. Will need to track down a new one I think and see if my theory is right.
Knew there would have to be some gremlins during the shake down process during the first 14 days of ownership!
Reckon there must be something on that road though - someone else broke down right behind me, and I stole their RAC man when he'd sent them on their way! Seemed to know his stuff too from what I could tell and went through pretty much exactly the same fault finding process as I had and agreed with most of my conclusions. Sadly as it wasn't something we could deal with on the roadside, I had to get towed back here.

Re: Today I mostly .....
Yesterday I finished converting a plastic 210l oil drum into a 2nd water but and linked it to the primary one. Found some piping bits in the shed and cobbled a connecting pipe together.
Cut out a circular lid from some Plywood I had in storage and gave it a coating of fence paint.
The I emptied into the new water butt 10l of water and marked 10l increments up the side.
This morning at 8am this mornning 50l of water had been captured.

Re: Today I mostly .....
Started converting an old Grundig Sky box into a case to house a MiniITX motherboard.
So far board is mounted after drilling and tapping the case.
I have reused the LEDs that are original to the Sky box along with the power button and wired them into the motherboard.
