|
|
I read an article about old 4 speed gearbox's having a lower first gear.
On Baxters site i think and he was on about lada cars.
My question is what ratios where in the old 4 speed out of a niva from about 1987?

The boxes have always had the same 1-4 ratios. The diffs were used to vary the final drive.
The 5-speed box is a 4-speed with the extra gear added rather crudely. Hence the need for the overfill to keep the 5th speed cluster adequately lubricated. _________________ GadgetBoy

Gonna have to disagree a bit here chaps, I have the ratios as follows.
4 speed: 1600 model (as a comparison)
First 3.242:1
Second 1.989:1
Third 1.289:1
Fourth 1:1
5 Speed
First 3.67:1
Second 2.10:1
Third 1.36:1
Fourth 1:1
Fifth 0.82:1
The layshafts have different numbers of teeth on them as well which corroborates this. _________________ Neil, Whitchurch, Hampshire

Good point Neil.
Although the ratios I got from several Russian sites a while ago showed the 4 and 5 speeds to be the same 1-4 ratios for Nivas (and 2104/5/7 salons):
4 speed
1 1:3.667
2 1:2.100
3 1:1.361
4 1:1.000
R 1:3.53
5 speed:
1 1:3.667
2 1:2.100
3 1:1.361
4 1:1.000
5 1:0.82
R 1:3.53
But I have also read of a couple of sources with the ratios you list (which are also the same as the 2016 1600 saloon) for a Niva 4 speed.
Presumably either set of ratios also could have been originally fitted to 4-speed Nivas - I wonder if there were 2 different ratio 4 speeds used in the Niva (ie the 2016 and the 2014/5/7 'boxes)?
Anyone want to check the parts manual?
Either way the 1200 is still the only low gear 'box swap. _________________ 1990 Niva 1600, Weber & 2" lift

parts cat for niva does show different countershaft & input shaft (4th gear) between 4 & 5 speed.
actual gears themselves are the same through
(different mainshaft/extension housings/mounting bracket also) _________________ PARTS SUPPLIED FOR:

I would paul, as if Niel is correct ten the 4 speed is actually a higher ratio than the 5 speed and will make the problem even worse... _________________ 1996 2.9v6 lada niva auto

The 1200 'box is still a low ratio swap.
But yeah, if you can the TC mod is best as it onlys comes to play when you need it (ie off road), and it allows you to keep 5 gears. |

I have in my Niva bible ratios for both four and five speed boxes.
Four speed
1st, 3.75
2nd, 2.30
3rd, 1.49
4th, 1.00
rev, 3.87
Five speed
1st, 3.67
2nd, 2.10
3rd, 1.36
4th, 1.00
5th, 0.82
rev, 3.53
Seems to me Vaz had a lot of different ratios to suit different cars and Nivai.
My book has Vaz 2121 and 21211. |
