LADA RIVA FOR SALE.

Post by Chiefy » Wed Mar 17, 2010 12:04 pm

Hello,

I am - sadly - looking to sell my 1990 Lada Riva 1600 SLX. The reason for this is that it doesn't run at the moment and I cannot afford to repair it. I started experiencing problems in January with a loss of oil and ultimately it was found that the car would need new drive chain tensioners. But this mend seemingly necessitates more than just tensioners. My mechanic has used the word 'terminal' but, unwilling to accept that as gospel, I have decided to try to sell it to anyone looking for a Lada project, and here seemed like the best place to start.

The car is in dark blue and boasts a five-speed gearbox. There is some light rust on the vehicle but mainly it is in good condition. The slider bars for the heater have been pushed into the dash and have limited movement, but the heater seems to work fine. I cannot think of anything else that is broken; it all works a charm.

I am not a mechanical Wunderkind; I have just been a Lada fan since forever. I bought mine last June and drove it from Dartford to the west coast of Cumbria, where it now resides. As you might imagine, she was a joy to drive. If you have any interest, feel free to state it here.

Regards,
Keith.

1. You're right next door to Alan, our esteemed host, so parts and advice will not be a problem.

2. I suspect your mechanic is talking out his arsé.

The chain tensioner is an easy job and can be done with relatively little dismantling. Now, needing a chain tensioner because of oil loss sounds a little fishy.

I think we need a little more information.

I agree with GadgetBoy. Take the car and get a second opinion if you can. Where is the oil leaking from? The car looks great.

3rd vote for Alan. When the garage i took my lada to said i needed a new head due to the timing belt eating the head, i called Alan to enquire about a new head...The reply was Why ? I explained. Alan said, if you want bring here and i will sort. So i did, a 2 hour trip up the M6, a spot of camping by Ulswater and dropped the Niva off at Dr Bird and all was well. New tensioner, new pad and sorted.
Regards.

I'm all in favour of you saving the wonderful car, but if you really have to part with it, do you have a price in mind?

Hmm... what wonderful people. :)

I might give it a second look then, if consenus is that it shouldn't be a monster job.

I thank you all for your advice and will look into it. If I still plan to sell I will be back to let you all know. :)

Cheers guys,
Keith.

I'm throwing in my vote for Alan. I had a couple of those and wish i had never gotten rid of them. They're rare as leprechaun droppings over here now.

Note: I said, and others agreed, that it is pretty impossible to get a faulty timing chain tensioner from an oil leak.

So. It may not be the chain tensioner.

You need to give us a lot more information if the fault is to be diagnosed correctly.

A faulty timing chain tensioner can be the cause of an oil leak in certain circumstances but i agree not the other way round.

Any news??

I was told when I took my Riva for a service earlier this year that both bottom balljoints needed doing, probably my timing chain & one of my brake pipes was 'excessively corroded'. They couldn't get the back brake discs/drums off either, after 4 days! Took him for his MOT, none of it needed doing! Seriously, there's something weird going on with my brakes!
