I took a look and the thing that interested me was further down the advert the seller claims to be able to supply RHD models within the near future. Would be interesting to know how he is going to do that with no RHD steering boxes available.

No worries, I didn’t get offended, and hope you or others weren’t either.

You’re a friendly bunch, otherwise you wouldn’t get together on this forum.

Only trying to inject some humor into the subject.

Many years ago (BC) (that’s Before Computers), I joined the National Niva Owners Club, (I think that’s what it was called). And got a quarterly magazine. Great fun at the time.

I moved away from Nivas as my bank balance couldn’t take anymore.

I’m now on to Land Rovers, and once again my bank balance is finding it hard to keep up.

Oh well. Roll on the Lotto tonight.

Stretching the truth a bit with the fuel injection, the way it reads, would lead people to think it had a GM engine instead of the GM electric box for the injection system, unless I have missed a big development in lada engines, i.e. no more fiat based engines.

Hello everyone, I hope you're ready for an essay...


I would like to commend you all for your staunch loyalty to your forum host, Alan.

I would also like to apologise if I have upset anyone in the user group for having offered, via Ebay, the opportunity of owning a new Niva.

As it happens I had come across Lada UK's website previously but had seen nothing at all to suggest that car imports were on offer and could see no used vehicles listed for sale - and thus, along with other research I felt that a reasonably unopposed opportunity existed.

I would like to make it clear that I never set out to clash with another importer and that last thing I would want to do is alienate any branch of enthuasiasts/hardcore Lada nutters.

I have e-mailed Alan outlining the above and I hope that he is reassured by my wishes to work in harmony with, not against, you lot!

I have imported all sorts of new cars in fits and starts before and on my latest trip to the Alps, putting up with the mother in law on yet another family skiing holiday, my Niva thoughts finally gelled - spotting several very useful looking examples doing what they do best - and wondering why on earth such relatively good value vehicles (vis a vis a new Defender) weren't as popular as they should be in the UK, despite the lhd.

Subsequently, talking to the East Europeans that work with me, I discovered a good contact with reasonable prices.

As per the Ebay ad, which really is just a toe in the water, I do not purport to be some flashy, glass and polished floors car dealer - just a dependable bloke who can deliver a Niva with the right paperwork for a smooth registration.

I do not profess to be a Niva authority, in fact I have only just secured a French registered car myself, and emailed Lada UK only days ago about an RHD steering rack so the wife would get behind the wheel - as she's vetoed a LHD car. (You lot seem to reckon no-can-do so I guess I need to find an RHD parts car).

As for the emissions/MOT shenanigans, as far as I am aware (and I do profess to know about these things - being an American import SVA test veteran), the requirements that apply at the time of registration are those that the vehicle will be held to at MOT time throughout it's life. Changes are not made retrospectively. This means a 1977 Cortina can still be MOT'd today but would not be allowed on the roads if had been built yesterday.
A Lhd new car with EU approval does not need an SVA test - but does need the registrant to confirm by signature that the foglights, headlights and seatbelt all operate to UK standards. There is NO requirement for a new car to have airbags. Ever seen a Caterham with an airbag wheel?

Also, do excuse my ignorance if the motor is Fiat derived - but all the promotional material relating to new Nivas goes on like there's no tomorrow about the 1700 unit being a 'GM injection engine'. Who's right?

My friends, Alan truly is your Luke Skywalker - but I don't want to get cast as Darth Vader. I do not live on the Death Star and I have not been sent by a malign force to destroy all other Lada people.

PPS I do have an automotive engineer in the 'old east' (no, not just a bloke with a dog in a garage) who is looking at supplying RHD change parts (as a kit to begin with) for the Niva. This is months away and I certainly don't have any RHD Nivas to sell - but the viability of this depends on interest.
