Yeah wind shields are easy to get hold of and small, even on a windy day without a wind sheild a gas stove will boil water faster than an improved peformance Trangia! Also, the cheap Trangias only come with 1L pots.
I should say i'm not against meths stoves, but given the choice i would choose gas, and you've stumbled across one of my favourite outdoor sports topics.
Oh and you can't really change the size of the flame with a Trangia.

Agree... it's idle or redline! But who likes mediocrity anyway...

Funny how many gizmo-addicts there are among the outdoor/nature/adventure/camping addicts... Googling for "trangia AND burners"... They are even worse than us auto/car/offroad nerds. We are more into function, at least in the offroad hobby, right?

Try google or youtube for "wood gas stoves" :) did you know that even extisted!!??

I'm out... sold all my stuff when i started trucking

It's a sad day here as Skittle the Wonderpooch is being put down in 20 min :( . She is not doing well and our vets last ditch efforts to try and hold off the end didn't work. She lost most of her motor control... went blind and deaf in the course of a couple of days... We'll miss her. Gotta go bring her to the vets now.

Have a good day everyone.

Sorry to hear that Chris.
Age has caught up quickly with our old pooch, took her down to the beach today and she slowly hobbled down the sand and just stood paw deep in the water looking out to sea.

can't put weight on back legs...

the vet says if i'm lucky she's had a mild stroke (which he doesn't think has happened),reckons it's more likely degeneration of the spine, and if no change in couple of weeks, really time to start saying bye bye

so i'd hate have to do what you're doing right now chris........

Today i mainly rescued a stuck quad bike.
On they way home from the shops i drove past the local slipway at the beach.

Making sure my boat trailer was still present i went to turn around and spotted the quad bike stuck on the beach, upto its belly in soft muddy sand about 20-25m out.

So i wandered down and spoke to the guy and he confirmed he was stuck and was awaiting the beach life guard to turn up (they have a winch on their LR). So i offer the use of the ropes in the back of my LR while waiting for the lifeguard to turn up. I proceed to get positioned on the concrete embankment and get as close as i dare to the seaweed coverd concrete section. Get out the ropes and shackles and the guy walks out to the quad as i start attaching them altogether. He attaches the rope to the quad and i attach the rope to the Jate rings on the chassis and get ready to drag him out. It didnt work, with the wheels spinning on the concrete the quad stayed put ( i was reversing uphill on concrete after the tide had been in and gone out)
So I try again.....nope. not moving.

By this time the LR with the winch has arrived and is sat watching the fun and games.

In the end we had one either side of the quad lifting the rear end and me towing. After a few rocks back and forth the quad sprang out the mud and was towed to the hard standing...
Regards.

My favourite camping food is tinned rice pudding, thats great cold

The trouble I have with trangia is I always put the wrong amount of fuel in, and trying to re-fill them when they are hot is not easy.

Better than the old solid fuel stove I used to have, though that won for size and weight.

Picked up a Toshiba Tecra 8100 in mint shape for not too much money.
Made my "Free Flowing" exhaust by welding the big can on the back of my spare Cat and found out it was WAY WAY too loud :( .. Even louder than just the open pipe on the cat. I decided to weld the stock muffler back on.. The mig wasn't working so good till i found out that there was a burr in the tip. Put a new tip on and WOW what a difference. (NOTE TO SELF - get a welding jacket... my arms look like i got the chickenpox now  . )

Oh BTW if anyone is thinking of making a can of beans on their exhaust manifold make sure you poke holes in the top of the can LOL My buddy blew up a can under the hood once and BOY what a stink.
