The Punto has proven itself to be quite reliable. I've taken it around the country and most recently to a race track, doing total of 6500 miles so far. It's been with me through thick and thin and has always started first turn of the key.

Picked it up for £179 and I have invested only £57 (oil, oil filter, 2 bulbs, 2 part worn tyres, replacement of 1 tyre I already had, front bumper and wheel covers). I'm very grateful. Just goes to show that cheap isn't always bad. :)

About to fall into bed as I'm absolutely knackered, but waiting to grab a shower first.

Got up just after five AM, spent sevenish hours folded into the back of a VW Scirocco R (thank goodness I brought a couple of pillows or I'd have been in agony after an hour) driving from home in Milton Keynes up to a convention in Livingston.

Since then have registered, figured out a rough mental map of the hotel, got lunch, took a bunch of photos, meet and greeted more people than I can count. Attended a few Q&A style panels, got dinner (expensive in the hotel but handy and actually pretty decent), then attended a live DJ'ed dance session in the evening. Mainly for my other half who is more into that sort of thing - but after about half an hour even I was bouncing around like a lunatic. First time I've done anything like that since I was about five years old.

Now however I'm absolutely knackered...*collapses*

So that's that...last evening get together/dance/gather etc. Con is done.

One of the most enjoyable, carefree and generally relaxing weekends I think I can ever recall being involved in.

So tomorrow we all check out and watch the hotel return to its normal world of holidaymakers and business travellers (probably mostly them given it's buried in an industrial estate) and we try to transition back in to "real life."

...why the *bleep* did it take me ten years to get around to this?!?

Actually had to put diesel in the Xantia. I know I don't do many miles...but last time was at the start of September...

It's not had much of a decent run lately, so got a bit of an Italian Tune Up today. Running far better now, though the initial cloud of soot that came out the back was downright comical. Not sure if the BMW driver who was tailgating me at the time thought so mind you. Still, served him right.

Gave the Xantia her first proper long run. 480 odd miles from Milton Keynes to Pitmedden in Aberdeenshire. £44 of diesel and 52.9mpg. Not bad for a car this age and size I reckon.

So, my Xantia lives a relatively quiet retirement these days, generally doing around 3000 miles a year.

...Except for the last couple of weeks, when she found herself dragged up north and put into daily use while I was stripping my father's house prior to him moving. Back home yesterday, having done well over 2000 miles in a week and a bit.

One slight gremlin with the cooling fans (which were already dodgy and have been for over a year), but other than that didn't miss a beat, and returned an average of somewhere around 53mpg which I'm well happy with.

Really do need to find me the bits to install cruise control though - it's the one thing this car really is missing in terms of being a fantastic tourer, and it's far, far too easy to end up creeping north of 80 on the motorway because it's so darn quiet, and it does like to creep upwards.

Given we're half pondering an epic 1200 mile road trip in the spring up into Scandinavia, I'd really like it fitted before that...

Been a pretty good Christmas here too. Had family and friends over yesterday (and their dog, so ours has been knackered today having spent the whole of yesterday playing) and just had a nice relaxed day.

I've been poking around a bit with a silly project for the new year that I've been meaning to get to for years (literally).

Upon finding an early Toyota Supra in our local scrap yard, and it having been there for a couple of weeks and having virtually every item removed *but* the digital dash, I decided it needed to be grabbed as it was simply too cool to let go to waste...especially for the fiver it cost me. That was about fifteen years ago, and it's been rattling around in the "do something with one day" box ever since.

Found it again the other day and have started poking around with it.

Plan is to take this (anyone remember them?)...

Image

...and turn it into a status readout panel for my PC. Speedo will be CPU load, rev counter probably a graphical representation of the same, fuel gauge for RAM load, and temperature gauge to show the CPU temperature. Clock will be used as well...a clock, and I'll find something to do with the warning lights.

Current planned approach is to have my PC simply spit out the relevant data from the serial port a few times a second, then have probably an Arduino to actually drive the dash. It appears to do all the signal processing and display driving on board (simply plugging in where the standard analogue one would), so I'm hoping that it will be a pretty simple matter of wiggling some voltages around on some pins and in the case of the speedo just spoofing the hall effect sensor.

That's the *theory* anyway, though I still need to work out how to power the thing. Annoyingly absolutely nothing in terms of connectors seem to be labelled in there and I've not been able to find any useful data on the internet, so reverse engineering looks to be the order of the day.

Reverse engineering might take a while given the sheer density with which things are packed in though. I'm hoping that once I get the main board out that it will be pretty apparent where power is coming from so I can figure it out.

Image

Every module there seems to use a minimum of two board construction, and sod all is labelled. Thankfully it's all through hole construction so no surface mount nonsense to worry about.

Utterly pointless, but should be a fun little side project. It's been forever since I actually made something just for the sake of it.
