Anroid tablets...Bluetooth / GPS

Post by excossack » Wed Dec 26, 2012 7:30 pm

I am thinking of a 7 or 8" tablet for in the car to OS maps on. That's the easy bit. The hard bit is...I need either GPS or Bluetooth on the tablet.

Is there a USB GPS dongle available for Android tablet? or is there a chance I can get a Bluetooth adapter to connect via bluetooth from my phone and send the GPS co-ords from my phone to the tablet?
Regards.

It probably will be a whole new thread. I'd rather it was Android as I have an app already for my phone and with a Pi I would also need a screen in addition to the Pi.

I am not too proud to say that I have little or no expertise on the subject, my satnav is 5 foot tall and calls me a spanner when I miss a turning, I don't know about bluetooth but she has a couple of fillings although I haven't tried to plug her into the cigarette lighter yet :D. (maybe someone else will give you an answer worth reading, merry christmas)

I would like a Nexus but as its going in the car I was thinking of a cheaper one in case it got damaged etc. I use memory map for the OS maps as it covers the forest tracks and I can use it without a 3g / wifi connection.

On the other hand, the Ordnance Survey do some excellent maps, and Silva do equally excellent compasses - and they're not reliant on little, icky batteries or similar things! :D
Just stop, park up, get the flask out for a coffee or tea, and consult your maps. So much more civilised!! :D

Its probably going to come to buying one with GPS built in.
Paper maps I also carry if I have one for the area, but electronic ones are a lot easier to use when driving on your own and you can glance at the screen and see how far from the mark you are.

I've got a Galaxy S2 but would like a bigger screen for maps.
