CV joints and drive shaft wobbles

Post by nitro_warrior » Sun Nov 25, 2012 1:06 pm

I was hunting for a rattle on my Panda and in doing so was running the car on axle stands so the wheels could spin. I noticed that the drive shaft had a big oscillation. Video here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fUMN0XU ... ature=plcp

I assumed I had a collapsed bearing in my CV but on dismantling everything looks perfect.

So is that just common behaviour of a CV joint at full extension?

Nah there's a bearing and seal on the shaft that the right hand cable tie is clamp around. In Fiat's wisdom the inner boot is filled with gearbox oil, so when it cracks it pissess all the gearbox oil on the ground! That in combination with the boxes not liking GL5 oil, a non-graunchy Panda gearbox is as likely to find as a successful Panda breading program at a zoo.

Here's what the inside bits look like you can see the inner boot is "wet"

That's my next plan once it's re-assembled. Parts are being cleaned and painted seeing as they are off and a new bottom ball-joint fitted.

Now you know why I favour cage&ball joints for lifted Nivas! And will be changing back to them once I get really fed up of the clunking I get from the 'new' type - although they're not worn!

Thanks for that clarification. I knew Team Lada Forum was the right place to ask. I'll clean everything up, fit my knew ball joint and report back on a compressed spring test. Then I'll have to track down the actual source of the rattle...
