It's in good hands with Mr Allen MD (Metal Doctor).

Well I had to weld, 2 plates onto rear sills, rear end valance, left jacking point, right jacking point and that was just to put it through the mot, cannot wait to start stripping paint and see whats lurking
It seemed like there was just patches of rust and the rest is really sound.

Thats a N reg aswell!

Looks nasty but it all comes good with a bit of tlc :D

You should use that as your business name .....

Simon Allen MD

It would look good on business cards too.

I did a few weld repairs on a friends 88 Niva and was amazed that the paint is thicker than the steel!

Sounds like my Riva (also N reg!). Car in general is solid - with the exception of the nearside front and offside rear corners which had basically just dissolved!

Like this...

Ladas seem strangely prone to doing that! I've had a few old cars, and they've tended to be relatively solid, or relatively rusty throughout...These patches of severe rust are different though.

My Riva, H reg (sorry to spoil the pattern) looks like that on my front drivers foot well. Im currently looking for someone to weld it up that will not cost a fortune and isn't too far since it will have to be trailered at more cost .
Is the rust in the picture the front passenger footwell?

Yep, that's the passengers footwell - and you're looking *through* where the outrigger that braces the floorpan is meant to be!

The outrigger and floorpan have been repaired now, just need to figure out how to rebuild the bit where the front of the sill used to end and connect the various bits of metal together again. It's never going to be pretty, but hopefully it'll eventually satisfy Mr. MOT Tester. The back looks like it'll be more of a straight patch at least, so shouldn't be too complicated.

Is making me really wish I had a car roller though, as this would be bordering on easy if I could actually get at the underside of it without being upside down!

That's going to be one solid Niva when you get it back.

I'd be sure to go mad with rust preventative products when you get it back, and follow the yearly(?) rust schedule in the workshop manual.

Coming on Simon. A good advert for not having the Cossack plastic on the vehicle!
