Oh dear, noisy birds. Living in Aberdeen I can associate with that. The gulls here are a menace. Aside from the noise, they're bloody destructive too!

Went to B&Q to buy paint and wallpaper
Refitted the mudflaps on the Landy with some new Stainless bolts

Collected a bunch of old Acorn computer equipment. One A7000, two A4000s, three multisync monitors, a couple of keyboards and a mouse. There may be more to follow if the current owners missions to find homes for the other 4000s and 3000s fails. One of the monitors is probably going to get re-wired to work with my Amiga as its current monitor lacks any red content (it's a signal processing fault - but four or five attempts on my part have always failed to track it down).

Then got home, offloaded the computer stuff and fiddled around with the Saab for a few hours.

[] Re-adjusted the fuel mixture on the Saab so it doesn't smell like I've left the choke on any more, and hopefully has returned to a more sensible fuel economy level - would like to beat the 8mpg on the last 2/3rds of a tank!

[] Attacked the engine bay with the pressure washer and degreaser so I can hopefully get a better idea of which of the oil leaks are actually current and which are historic and which are spills. It's still far from clean, but is a lot better than it was. It's a Saab - so the best way to describe where the oil is coming from is probably "everywhere."

[] Attacked the stainless steel wheel trims with some metal polish to remove the surface blemishes - they've come up like brand new. Not bad for having been on a set of wheels since 1989 and for 113 and a half thousand miles.

[] Made new wiper blades for the headlight wipers, as they haven't had any rubber in them since I got the car.

[] Dismantled and cleaned the inside of all of the tail lights as they were all disgusting. Not only are they brighter now, but they look better when off.

[] Fetched my head a terrific crack on the corner of the bootlid when tidying up after doing the above.

Finally (once the world stopped spinning!), gave the van a bit of a run back and forth around the drive as the brakes were sticking a bit initially - it hadn't been started in several weeks and was a bit grouchy about the fact. This tends to result in it periodically spitting flames out of the exhaust when cold, which while not ideal is somewhat amusing and apparently quite a crowd pleaser!

Its been years since I played with a Acorn machine(over 20+ years) I have a BBC B and BBC Master in the loft that needs a coat of looking at and testing prior to selling it.

Went out and watched the Olympic Flame make its way down Union Street before its overnight stop in Aberdeen.

Heck of a lot of people there!

Someone in work accidentally delete part of the OU structure within Active Directory.
Found out the physical Domain Controllers had not had a backup but did discovery the virtual DC's had been backed up. Eventually got the OU back..

The person who did the deletion won Idiot of the year award (the person wasn't me)

Attempted to digitise a couple of old 8-track tapes - at which point the player of course decided to throw a hissy-fit, turning the left channel into a voltage controlled oscillator. So had to remove the three hundred screws (for the second time in two weeks...only just had it apart to realign the heads!) and track the fault down.

Actually turned out to be nothing more sinister than a dirty set of contacts on the record/playback switch. Liberal application of contact cleaner and some good exercise of the switch (which has probably never been used since it was built in 1972) restored the unit's sanity - and has made the left and right volume controls track each other properly which they've never done before. Left channel was always louder before for the same position.

Might pick up where I left off tomorrow once I've re-assembled it.

Today I mostly...

1. Glared out the window at the weather which was persistently cold and drizzly all day.

2. Hid from said weather inside the van and finally got around to cleaning the carb jets out so that the blasted thing will idle properly when anything other than warm and won't try to die every time you so much as breathe on the accelerator pedal. It's nice being able to move it around without needing three feet.

3. While I was in there I also cleaned up all the bits of the ignition system - surprised given the state of the rotor arm and distributor cap that it was running at all...

That was about it to be honest!

It looks a good bit of kit and certainly cheaper than Exchange with the only real cost being hardware and backup solution.

And yup, best you follow along and at least you can learn the product.
