Today I mostly .....
Re: Today I mostly .....
Measured up the sills of the van so I know roughly how much box section I need to build new ones - about eleven feet of 50mm square 3mm box should do it, this evening breathed some life into a Marconiphone T69DA radio (circa 1960), it's still a bit deaf on FM, but otherwise working well. Will try another UCC85 tomorrow if I can find one (sure I have a spare rattling around somewhere) to see whether that improves the FM side of things as all generally suspect capacitors have already been sorted.
Finally also resolved the issue with this desk which I've had ever since I got it which was its tendency to be very bouncy - which invariably made the monitors wobble and rattle when typing. Couple of lengths of shelving rails, couple of holes drilled in them, then secured at the front edge of the desk with convenient existing bolt holes in the frame - problem solved. It ain't pretty, but at least the desk is solid now.
...Especially given the amount of weight there is on the top shelf...was a bit worried that was all effectively secured with four rather tiny looking spot welds...At least now it wouldn't topple over if said welds were to fail.

Re: Today I mostly .....
Received confirmation that my partner's Settlement Visa application has been accepted.
Oh boy, late December is going to be busy.
So...I have 32 days to clear out a person's worth of storage space in here! Let's see how many dead televisions, radios and computers I find when I excavate the wardrobe. I suspect there will be a lot of trips to the dump in order! ...Not for the stuff that's worth keeping, but for there's a lot in there which is just junk! ...There is actually a workbench in there, I've not seen it since the May before last though...

Tonight we had a power cut. Just as I light the gas the lights went out. Checked on the elderly lady next door and lent her a torch, the lady over the road needed a torch to find a torch so borrowed mine. I dug out the head torch and spare LED torch.
Found the number for Scottish Power and was informed via a recorded message there is and issue with the High Voltage line and engineers are investigating.
Anyway, power back on but we are still at 200 - 210 Volts.

Discovered that apparently I'm going to be doing a basic service and have a look to find a reason behind the "sluggish" performance of an ex-forces Land Rover circa 1965 at the weekend. That is presently all I know about the vehicle...Would have been nice to at least know what engine was in it and whether it was petrol or diesel...still, a bit of mystery makes things more interesting. Question remains to be answered is whether it is actually running low on power, or whether the owner just has too high expectations...Also will depend on what's under the bonnet.
Still, gives me a chance to drive a proper vehicle again for a change - has been too long!

Gadget, That was my thinking.
Change fluids, check and if necessary change the plugs, rotor arm, distributor cap, adjust points, replace if they're shot, change air and oil filters, grease anything with a grease point on it - then see where we are.
If it still runs like a sack of spanners, then starts the detective work.
At least they're common enough that I *shouldn't* have too much trouble getting hold of consumable parts locally I wouldn't have thought...Famous last words.

Today I mostly
Washed the Landy and the wife's Focus
Greased the prop shaft UJ's on the Landy
Checked oil/water levels, greased up the heater controls, checked all the lights work OK.
Sussed out why my 5 million candle torch didn't work/charge - one of the 6v Batteries was show 0.3v instead of 6v. Probably cheaper to buy a new torch than to buy a new battery.

Re: Today I mostly .....
Figured out why one of the wheels on the 306 as rubbing the wheel arch liner - whole rear axle assembly had shifted slightly to the left. Re-aligned it, then tightened the bolts up again. Not sure if they weren't tight enough last time (I didn't tighten them that time) or what has been going on...Will be monitoring the situation in case it happens again. Don't think it would have been a problem with the standard wheels on - but there's only a few mm clearance between the wheel arch liners and the wheels as it is with the alloys on.
Also replaced the headlight bulbs as I noticed last time I had it out at night that they were...well..pathetic. Set of Osram Nightbreaker Plus bulbs in there and I can now actually see where I'm going at night.
Looks like the Landie will be getting looked at weekend after next actually, owners are busy tomorrow and next weekend.
Picked up a pop rivet gun today, have some sneaky plans for temporary reconstructive surgery for the doors on the van which that may assist with. They need replacing at some point, but hopefully I might be able to do *something* with them.

Today I mostly...went to work.
After that, had a brief shot of a 1965 Daimler CVG6. Very nice. Proper bit of engineering that.
...Even if I am pretty convinced that it is humanly impossible to get either into or out of the driving seat with any degree of grace whatsoever...

Re: Today I mostly .....
Spent all day at the hospital (as I did yesterday
).
My wife went to A&E yesterday morning and was immediately admitted and given an emergency eppendectomy. Not just the usual diagonal cut over her appendix but a long vertical one from her belly button down which means weeks of recovery.
Not even had time to check out the Samara carb yet. At least her Matiz is more economical
