Bearing trouble.

Post by GadgetBoy » Sat Apr 18, 2009 5:45 pm

My tumble dryer started making funny noises this week so I investigated it today and discovered .....

This is the late rear drum bearing. The "clump" at 8 o'clock is the remains of a ball welding the inner and outer shells together.

What is more concerning is the size of the bearing. Half the weight of the drum and contents are supported by a bearing this size

What's even more surprising is that I had spares! They're exactly the same bearing in micro-scooter wheels and I'd kept the ones out of a dead micro-scooter. You never know when something will come in handy! :D

That'll be a hoover/candy dryer I guess. They usually end up with a nicely gouged arc in the back cabinet where the drum drops after bearing failure. Welcome to the world of the modern appliance!

RS (rubber shield) is much better bearing choice than metal shield (which has no two letter indicator, I believe)

Metal sheild has less resistance and friction, but that's totally nigligable and ignored in this application. Rubber shield will keep the moisture out, and keep the bearing running smooth a LONG time...

just my 2 cents! :D

That is a small bearing David - probably manufactured and installed as such so that it does give problems and promotes appliance renewal. Not everyone is mechanically minded and I would think that the average Joe would possibly purchase another machine as opposed to have a go repairs. Well done mate.

Same problem with our BOSCH washing machine but it had big bearing probably about 5 inch diameter and lasted for less than 3 years, too many boiler suites
