Could be a decent project there for someone by the looks of it.

Shame about the steering box given how hard to find they are. Have to wonder if decent drawings of the original ones are available if it would be possible to get some of the parts remade locally. Never actually looked in detail (as I've mercilessly avoided steering box trouble so far!), but I'm assuming that it's the screw that actually wears out is it?

Yes its the actual worm gear that pits and wears, the bearings are available as are the shims and oil seals.

Most of them can be recovered and overhalued so long as you knwo what you are doing. Tom was looking to get some parts made but as with all these things it dependent on the costs and th amount of potential sales.

LHD boxes are easy to get but the internals are mirror opposites.

I've got 7 brand new genuine RHD steering boxes disassembled. I've managed to buy all the genuine parts from here and there over the last few years and they didn't come cheap. I did enquire about getting the specific RHD parts re-manufactured ( casings, Worms, Drop arms ) here in the UK and it's doable by one company but I never followed it up to get a costing because I don't think the volume of sales would be there.

This is the car that I have bought.. been after something retro for abit and decided on this. Real solid honest car and the steering box really isn't that bad just fitting a twin choke Weber to it as the other is very tepremental. Clutch feels like it's slipping but noticed that the pipe from the Resvoir to the master cylinder is soaking think it's perished on the inside. Would this make the clutch slip? And what's the best pipe to replace it with?

If it's got any play in the steering check the other components also, including the idler box bolted to the opposite side of the engine bay on the chassis ( repair bush and seal kits are available ) . Shouldn't have any clutch slip because of a leaking hose, that would make it hard to engage if it didn't have any hydraulic pressure. The slave cylinder ( attached to the clutch fork at the side of the box ) pushrod might be sticking ( corrosion built up behind the rubber boot/cap ) and that could cause it to slip. Replace the hose with the exact same type, also available. :)

It could cause slip if the hoses have degraded, not allowing fluid to return when the pedal is lifted, just as happens with brake hoses. I've also seen a few missing the return spring on the slave cylinder, so worth checking that is present and correct - and that it's adjusted properly.

Careful with the carb choices, bear in mind that this being a post 1993 car, that it needs to pass the cat specific emission test, which might be a struggle without the electronically controlled carb.

I did think if it was pipe it would be hard to engage gears if the fluid wasn't coming through, gonna get it back on the ramp at the weekend and have a proper look at the clutch issue, I work in a garage so getting it through a cat test isn't really an issue for me, and I plan on keeping it for a while, I'll keep all the original bits I take off it anyway incase I do decide to sell in the future
