Looks nice, but I'm not entirely sure about the "VERY RARE!!" part...

Me neither. I would say "exceptionally rare."

Hi Folks,
I'm the new owner of the above Niva. Been admiring them for a number of years and finally taken the plunge!
I'm having a few problems and would be grateful if anyone could suggest possible solutions:
Firstly, I've recently changed the rear brake cylinders for new ones (thanks Tom at Lada Spares) as one was leaking and the other seemed inoperative. Bled the brakes but the handbrake is only working on one side.
Secondly, when parked on a slope facing downhill it can take a few attempts to start. Turn ignition key but nothing happens. Seems ok on the flat though. There's also a smell of petrol in the cabin.
Many thanks,
Marcus.

Brakes.
1. Adjust handbrake to 4-5 clicks.
2. In the cabin, engine running, stand on the brakes, no harder than that, for goodness sake man put a bit of effort into it.
3. Adjust handbrake to 4-5 clicks if needed.
That should be it. If the handbrake still doesn't work the rear cable or the wheel mechanism is seized. Remove and lubricate as necessary.
Starting.
Check battery connections, starter motor connections including the spade connector between the two solenoid terminals which is invariably down the side of the spade and not on the spade properly. Check engine earth straps.
Fuel smell.
Replace the vapour separator in the off-side rear quarter behind the plastic trim panel.
