Cleaning rust off electrical contacts

Postby integraR » Wed Oct 24, 2012 10:18 am

Right I have a new cts on the way but the old one went a bit rusty in the contacts so what I am stuck with is how to remove the rust off those tiny contacts inside the plug, I have seen contact cleaner but none say they will remove rust. It looks like it would be a right epic to get a tiny bit of sand paper in there to clean them out so does anybody have any tips or magic solution to get the rust off? I have rust remover but it turns the metal black and I dont know about the conductivity of the resulting oxadised metal.

The contacts are rusty because the CTS is leaking. Not worth the effort cleaning it - it'll be stuffed internally.

Its the plug not the cts I have a issue with, its the cts plug/socket onto the loom that has a little rust on the terminals. Should I cut the plug off and bodge with a couple of connectors when the new one arrives?

No. Absolutely not.

Clean as best you can with a needle file.

Stick a bit of chunky electrical flex into a drill, having stripped about 20-25mm of wire at the end, insert wire into the socket, then run the drill. It'll clean the contacts up nicely.
