Re: Today I mostly .....

Although the system used in Invacars differs from that used by Dafs the principles are the same in that there should always be some tension on the belt, even when at rest. To achieve this the secondary pulley should always have a slight gap when in "low" ratio and this is 1mm in a Daf 33. This shoul...

Re: Today I mostly .....

I saw your panel with the 3 extra gauges, one of which is an engine oil temperature. May I ask how the gauge is attached to the engine, as I'm planning a similar arrangement for my Daf 33. In addition, what are the readings you normally notice when driving around?

Re: Moskvich 427 Estate UK Car RHD

I've checked it out on E-Bay and it's excellent! It's right hand drive, original and has minimal mileage, so a real bargain for anyone who's into Eastern European cars! You could easily use the car as an every-day one, as it'll keep up with modern traffic and with that huge boot it would swallow a w...

Re: Today I mostly .....

That timing chain tensioning arrangement looked strangely familiar to me. Moskvitch engines use a similar arrangement, although as their O.H.C. engines bore a remarkable similarity to B.M.W. ones, this design of tensioner might be a peculiarly German idea. I must say that setting the tension on a Mo...

Re: Today I mostly .....

I don't know if it helps, but I have a DAB/analogue aerial splitter on my classic. It's fitted with a normal chrome telescopic aerial, mounted on the rear wing and a "passive" splitter (I didn't open it up before using it) which I think simply splits the signal, allowing the DAB car radio to receive...

Re: Today I mostly .....

The front of the new brake cylinder looks perilously close to the front tyre, or is that an optical illusion? I'm a little concerned that a large bump might force the tyre up towards the cylinder & cause a problem.....

The funniest thing I've read all Christmas! "PARDON?"

I said......."THE FUNNIEST THING I'VE READ ALL CHRISTMAS!!!"

I hope the ears recover, but in the meantime, don't pull too many noisy crackers on Christmas Day!

Re: Today I mostly .....

Just a thought regarding your M.P.G. figures: Air-cooled Dafs return a comparable M.P.G. on town running, as the transmission is constantly changing down when a manual car would probably hang on to a higher gear. However, on a long high-speed run they excellent themselves, returning much better figu...

Re: Today I mostly .....

Good grief, if I'm not mistaken that's a Russian "Selina" short-wave radio on the shelf! I had one about 30 years ago and it sparked my interest in all things short wave, weird and wonderful. I rigged up an aerial in the back garden to improve the reception, which helped a little, too. In one of tho...

Re: Today I mostly .....

I had the same problem with my Xantia several years ago. I bought an exhaust kit over t'internet and upon arrival it just wouldn't fit, no matter how hard I tried! After sweating blood, increasing my obscene vocabulary and feeling generally cheated, I then "bit the bullet" and ordered a genuine one ...

I always seem to find strange organic life forms in the "difficult to access" (=impossible to remove without the assistance of a proctologist!) pollen filters and have more then once almost wanted to call the Natural History Museum... However, methinks your muddy swamp might be more suggestive of ho...

Re: Today I mostly .....

What an amazing car! My wife briefly owned one many years ago and described it as "somewhat thirsty" to put it mildly! Smooth, silent, comfortable, effortless and FAST were a few other epithets she used, too! Although you noted 18.1 M.P.G., I reckon a service and careful driving should put it on the...

Re: Today I mostly .....

Although not strictly relevant to this Forum, I, too, remember a photograph in a 1990 FSO brochure, which showed a very smart mechanic using a Sun tuner and a strobe lamp to check over a FSO Polonez, with the caption "our mechanics use the most up-to-date equipment to ensure your FSO is delivered to...
