I'm not advocating Cromwell as a perfect leader... All I am saying is that he was revolutionary, and no doubt a breath of fresh air in the 17th Century. However, yes, he was a murderer, but wasn't everyone in that era?

And baxter +++ for Tony Benn, but it's a shame he was never leader.

I did know that there is controversy over Cromwell in Ireland, and they do view him as a butcher. But, comparing Cromwell to the protestant Kings and Queens of this era, he looks a hell of a lot nicer to have in power. And it is true that Cromwell was comparitively tolerant to religions, as a Purita...

Who is the greatest leader of the British Isles?

Ok firstly, apologies to those who don't live in the UK or RoI, it goes way over my head if there's too much to compare and contrast against, which is why I thought it sensible to restrict it to these here islands in NW Europe. I was wondering in a history class today who the greatest leader of this...

Ok, I don't know where closing the internet comes into this, or your line of argument for that matter, BUT... I agree that we do have a fight on our hands with regard to the insidious nature of capitalism. Personally, I don't want to end up as a wage slave, worth only the value of my labour hours in...

I don't go to public school in the UK, I go to state school. Public = private in the UK. And, even though the US education system is bad compared to Europe, I don't really think that your guide can be applicable for North Eastern Ontario, considering it was the Washington Post that wrote it. Of cour...

Well, I do want to teach when I'm older, but not in Canada really. My point was, if I made a post on why lorry drivers didn't deserve the money they got (just as to the same extent prospector is questioning how much students deserve the grades they get) I'm sure you'd be slightly annoyed at that. I ...

Quite frankly, I don't think that is the case. I think what has changed over the years is the methods the teachers use to teach. Obviously, with advances in technology, more visual and practical ways of learning are available for use, and teachers are just getting better at their job. I spent 8 hour...

I don't think reduction of rights is in order, I think reduction of priviledges is. You can argue that they're the same thing but I fundamentally see corporal punishment as a reduction of rights, not of priviledge. £100 fine, that's a reduction of priviledge. Every human has the right to rights. You...

Gadgetboy, nuclear stock piles , population of the earth, annual cheese consumption, have all increased since corporal punishment was abolished. Corrolative data doesn't mean anything unless there is a clear causation link to the consequences. I don't like this arguement at all that keeps on being r...

Firstly, forgive me Lucky Eight for completely misunderstanding a post written in an entirely satirical manner, on a forum where, looking at some of the other posts in this thread alone I wouldn't put it past someone to write a serious post of that manner. I suppose reading it after midnight doesn't...

Well I'm not a great fan of religion, but my acid test is; does your religion impede the liberty of others? If yes, then it won't play a part in my ideal world. Be it the belief that Muslim women should have to wear a Sherpa (unless they themselves are fine with that) or stoning or Jihadist/McCarthy...

Thankyou, I just wish sometimes some people could find a kinder light to view certain issues under. Many things aren't a case of 'my way or the high way'.
